Following intense competition, six finalist crews emerged: Polygon Team, Popping Taofu, Rockz Elements, Team BaseOut, Wingo, and Wishes (in no particular order). Each team will receive a HK$6,000 choreography fund to prepare new routines for the finale, where they will perform two pieces – one to an original HKDL 20th Anniversary theme song and another to a self-selected track – in their bid for the championship title.
Taking inspiration from Toy Story, one of the finalist crews, Team BaseOut, brought the Toy Soldiers to life on stage with their captivating costumes and stage presence. Blending Street Dance, Hip Hop and Popping styles into a cohesive narrative, the team’s choreographer shared, “We wanted the audience to see our creativity and energy. With Disney magic woven throughout our routine, we invite everyone to join us in the joy that reminds us of our happy childhood memories. We especially featured theatrical elements in the opening and closing to showcase both style and playfulness.” Coming from backgrounds ranging from young students to working professionals, with some members bringing over a decade of dance experience, the team admitted, “The biggest challenge for us during practice was to imitate the movements and expressions of the Toy Soldiers. Not only did we have to adjust and align our body language, but also fine details of our facials and moves to act ‘toy-like.’ It was such a fresh challenge for those of us used to pop styles.”
Another finalist crew, Rockz Elements, showcased the dynamic and explosive power of Breaking, incorporating impressive flips and rock moves in their routine. Despite their extensive stage experience, the team found the competition uniquely challenging: “The cheerful Disney vibe is quite different from our usual style. It wasn’t easy to find our groove at first, but after plenty of practice, we finally captured the song’s rhythm and mood, letting our full energy shine through.”
For them, the competition meant more than winning, but also forming new friendships and enjoying the stage. “Through this competition, we hope to help more people discover the myriad possibilities of Breaking and break down stereotypes – Breaking can be both joyful and commercially viable.”
After all crews completed their performances, the organisers invited judges and participants to a spontaneous "Dance Party." The judges demonstrated various dance moves, while Lyman Heung led an interactive dance session with the participants, bringing the excitement to a peak. Contestants enthusiastically joined in, and HKDL representatives presented exclusive 20th Anniversary souvenirs to outstanding performers, ending the day on a high note.
Lana Wong, Director, Communications and Public Affairs of HKDL, said, “As part of our year-long 20th anniversary celebration, ‘The Most Magical Party of All,’ HKDL is sharing the joy and magic with the community. We have committed more than HK$5 million donation, including HK$2.5 million dedicated to youth development initiatives, such as this first-ever ‘Dance-Off Party’ with the HKFYG. Through this, we hope to inspire the younger generation to unleash their imagination, unlock their potential and embrace new possibilities.”
Carrie Wong, Supervisor of the HKFYG, said, “As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of HKDL and 65th anniversary of the HKFYG, the competition holds special meaning. Following last year’s ‘A Magical Odyssey in Music,’ this collaboration once again provides young people with a platform to shine through arts and culture. Research shows that participation in the arts strengthens youth development across five key areas: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Caring Spirit and Character. For this reason, the HKFYG is committed to promoting the arts, helping young people cultivate a positive outlook and realise their full potential.”
